High Yield Fenugreek Farming Information Guide

What is Fenugreek?

 Fenugreek plants are grown only once in a year. Whose length can be from 1 feet to 3 feet, it depends on its species, place and season where it is. The taste of Fenugreek is slightly bitter. Its soup and fried leaves is also considered very beneficial for everybody’s health.

Now Let us see High Yield Farming of Fenugreek

Fenugreek is cultivated in India mainly in the western part of the country like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. It is counted in spicy crops and is used for green vegetables, grains (condiments) and in some places fodder. Dried Fenugreek seeds are used as a spice, seasoning of vegetables, pickles and in the production of medicines. It is full of many qualities. Hence its demand remains throughout the year. Protein is found in abundance in it. And micro elements are also available in abundance in it. Fenugreek is also a good source of Vitamin K in addition to Vitamin C.

Fenugreek is an autumn crop and is cultivated during Rabi season. It also tolerates frost attack. Long cool weather, humid climate and low temperature are suitable for its vegetative growth. During the formation of flowers or grains, the incidence of diseases and pests increases due to high humidity in the air and cloudy weather. Cool and dry weather at the time of crop ripening is beneficial for the yield.

Fenugreek land preparation:

For the cultivation of Fenugreek, loamy or sandy loam soil, in which organic matter is abundant and proper drainage capacity, is considered best for its successful cultivation. The field should be clean, clean and friable otherwise germination is affected. At the time of last plowing of the field, chlorpyrifos 20 kg. Per hectare should be applied, so that underground pests and termites can be saved. After plowing the pad must be run so that the moisture can be conserved.

Fenugreek seed rate and seed treatment:

Seed rate for Fenugreek is 20-25 kg. per hectare is sufficient. By sowing seeds. Pre-treatment with fungicide (Carbendazim 3 gm/kg of seed) should be done. Seed treatment Rhizobium culture at 5 g/kg. Doing it at the rate of seed gives benefit.

Fenugreek sowing time and method

The best time for Fenugreek cultivation is from mid-October to mid-November in the plains and March-April in the hilly areas. Delayed sowing results in low yield. For more production, its sowing, 25 cm in rows. Row to row distance and 10 cms. Do it at the rate of plant-to-plant distance. Seed depth 5 cm Should not be more than that.

Fenugreek Manures and fertilizers

For any crop, it is beneficial to use manure and fertilizer on the basis of soil test. If for some reason the soil test is not done, then give cow dung or compost (10-15 tons) while preparing the field. Its root does the work of nitrogen fixation, so less nitrogen has to be given to the crop. 20-25 kg as chemical fertilizer. Nitrogen, 40-50 kg. Phosphorus and 20-30 kg. Potash should be given in rows at the time of sowing.

Improved variety of Fenugreek:

Pusa Early Bunching

This early maturing variety has been developed by ICAR, New Delhi. Its flowers come in clusters. It can be harvested 2-3 times. Its pods are 6-8 cm. It is long. The seeds of this variety are ready in 4 months.

Hisar Sonali (HM-57 )

The development of this variety Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. It is 103 cms. It is a high growing variety. Leaves are dark green, white flowers and seeds are golden yellow in colour. It is a mature variety in 140 to 150 days. Its yield per hectare is 16 to 18 quintals.

RMT-1

This variety has been developed by Jobner Agricultural University, Rajasthan. Its plants are tall growing and medium branched. It is the original thawing resistant variety. It is ready for harvesting after 140 to 150 days. Its yield is 15 quintals per hectare.

Rajendra Kranti

This variety has been developed by Rajendra Agricultural University, Bihar. Its plants are bushy and more branchy of medium height. It is suitable for pure cropping and intercropping system. It is a variety resistant to leaf spot disease. The crop is ready for first harvesting 120 to 125 days after sowing. Its yield is 12 to 14 quintals per hectare.

Fenugreek Irrigation and drainage requirement:

Water logging is not right for any crop, it is necessary to have sufficient moisture in the soil for proper germination of Fenugreek. Light irrigation should be done in case of lack of moisture in the field. Irrigate with an interval of 10-15 days depending on the soil. Due to accumulation of unnecessary water in the field, the crop starts turning yellow and dying. Therefore, additional drainage should be arranged.

Fenugreek plant protection

Weed control -Keep the field weed free by hand weeding after 15 and 40 days of sowing. In chemical method, pendimethylene kg. Active ingredients should be applied to the field before sowing.

Disease and pest control – Seed and soil treatment should be done with organic fungicide Trichoderma to prevent Jaglan disease. Crop rotation should be followed. For the prevention of powdery mildew disease, spraying of carbendazim 0.1% and soluble sulfur 0.2% should be done with organic fungicide Trichoderma seed and soil treatment. Crop rotation should be followed. Carbendazim 0.1% and 0.2% soluble sulfur should be sprayed for the prevention of powdery mildew.

Harvesting and threshing – The harvesting of Fenugreek depends on its variety and the part used. The first harvesting for vegetables starts about 4 weeks after sowing at the green stage of Fenugreek leaves. Cut the plant near the surface of the ground. Generally 4-5 cuttings are done at regular intervals. It should be harvested for grains when the crop starts turning yellow and most of the leaves drop leaving the upper leaves and the color of the beans turns yellow, then it should be done. If not harvested at the right stage, the grains start falling from the pods.

After harvesting the plants are tied in bundles and dried in shade for 1 week. After drying, the bundles are placed on a solid floor or tarpaulin and beaten with the help of sticks, due to which the grains come out from the beans. Thresher can also be used for this work. After cleaning the grains should not be filled in sacks and stored in damp ventilated rooms.

Yield of Leaf and grains of Fenugreek:

Its yield also depends on the variety and the parts used. If improved varieties and proper cropping practices are adopted at the right time, 50-70 quintals of green leaves are obtained per hectare for vegetables and 20-22 quintals of grains, spices and other uses.
